Indian Flying Fox: Pteropus giganteus
This animal is part of the zoo for its ability to survive well in captivity and does well after it is reintroduced to it's natural environment. Unfortunaltely, the zookeepers are afraid that this bat will become a nuisants to farmers. The bats are beginning to feed on farmer's vegetable crops which could lead to a problem that will affect the bat's population.
This bat is large in size and mainly feeds on fruits and occasionally a vegetable or two from a local farmer. Indian Flying Foxes are native to the tropical islands of Maldive and are known to be able to travel from island to island in search of habitat and food. Unlike most bats the Indian Flying Fox relies on sight and smell for obtaining their food.
