What is a Hyrax?

General Physiology

• Small mammals that resemble rabbits with no tail and rounded ears

• Measure approximately 12-24 inches in length

• Can weigh between 2-12 lbs

• Covered in thick, soft fur with a distinct brightly colored spot of fur covering the scent gland located on the dorsal side of the body.

• Have muscular, short necks with a long body, truncated legs, and flattened nails on the digits resembling hooves

• Gestation period of 210-240 days (7-8 months)

• Yields 1-6 offspring (usually 3)

• Dwell in caves and trees

• Abundant in Africa and Middle East   

Unique Qualities

• Are the smallest hooved animals

• Kidneys enable them to function with very little water

• Very unstable body temperature, almost reptilian in nature

• Extremely 'clean' animals:

• ~depositing feces and urine in the same spot

• ~devote large amounts of time to grooming using the one claw on the inside toe of the hind foot to scratch and the incisors to comb the fur

• ~rubbing or scraping of portions of body          

• ~For Example:

• ~After urinating or defecating, the anus and sexual orifice are always rubbed off -the male drags his penis along a rock (seldom seen after mating as well)

• ~The nose is pressed upon a rock and sneezing will occur

• ~The mouth and eyes will be rubbed  against the rocks

• The rock Hyrax licks their lips

• The soles of the feet...
