Along with the plant species, 
species of birds,
 lizards, 
salamanders, 
frogs, toads, 
snakes, deer, 
foxes, and bears 
all live in the forest.
 The maritime forests in the Outer Banks are home to some of the most diverse maritime forests in the world. In Nag's Head there is a rare mixture of northern and southern tree varieties that only exist in four places in the entire world. There is an estimated 300 species of these trees on 640 acres of land.
