International History

Originally called Tau Phi Delta society, Sigma Pi was founded February 26, 1897, at Vincennes University in Indiana. The four founders were William Raper Kennedy, James Thompson Kingsbury, George Martin Patterson and Rolin Rosco James. In 1907, the organization was renamed Sigma Pi and became a national fraternity.

Today, Sigma Pi is comprised of over 110 active chapters, 12 colonies, and over 77,000 alumni in 30 American states and Canada. Shadowwood, a 13-acre country estate in Vincennes, Indiana, serves as the International Headquarters of the Fraternity. On the grounds are benches that represent every university chapter.

Chapter History

Zeta-Sigma Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity, International was founded on the
campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College on April 5, 1986. The chapter was closed in May 2003 and recolonized on August 25,2003. The chapter was originally formed as Phi Kappa Omega in 1983. The chapter strives to bring a group of diverse men into a brotherhood that will promote scholarship through Wesleyan's liberal arts education; display chivalry idealized by bravery, courtesy, and honor; diffusing culture by the ever changing campus community; and to develop character to be successful in a free and diverse society. These principals are displayed in our creed, Wesleyan's purpose, and by the successful men this chapter has produced. Zeta-Sigma is active in raising money for the American Red Cross and Multiple Sclerosis. We are one of three national fraternities on campus along with two national sororities. One of the fraternities is a historically African American national fraternity.

North Carolina Wesleyan College is an independent four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1956. The College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The main campus is located in Rocky Mount, with off-campus locations in Raleigh, Durham, and Goldsboro for continuing education and adult degree programs.
